It does have the advantage that you read basset clarinet, basset horn and
bass clarinet parts in the bass clef with the same fingering (ie no octave
transpositions), even though the basset clarinet sounds an octave higher
than the bass (and a fifth higher than the basset horn).

It's also worth adding that you have to read treble clef differently too. If
you are reading a "German" bass clarinet part in the bass clef, and there is
a section with treble clef, this will be "at pitch", not sounding an octave
lower as in the usual French notation (everything written as if for soprano
clarinet but sounding an octave lower).
