I certainly would not have the presumption to disagree with Tony Pay
and I always was a little scornful of Pamena Weston's opinions once I
read her comment that it was impossible to play both clarinet and sax
well. (What about Brymer for instance). Later I worked under her
direction and came to realise that she also had a great deal of
musical knowledge and general musician ship.
I think it is important to remember that with continued musicological
research we do know more about how music was played in times past.
Nevertheless we must not forget that there is a lot we don't know;
nor can we listen to !*thcentury music as the contemporary audience
did; our own musical background is so different.
One thing that doesn't date however is common sense, which is why I
still consult Thurston Dart'd book. Later research has shown that
some of his conclusions are misguided, but the validity of his
commonsesnse approach is as helpful as it was 50 years ago.
