About Pamela Weston: the entry in the 1985 edition of The International
Who's Who in Music and her monograph from Fentone Music includes some of the
following information, to which I have added from personal experience: born
in London 17 October 1921. Clarinet teacher and writer. Her father was a
medical doctor and her mother was a keen amateur musician and a student of
Lionel Tertis. Studied piano at RAM 1941-3 and studied the clarinet
privately with Frederick Thurston, having been inspired by his playing.
Awarded a Guildhall scholarship 1945-9. LRAM, GRSM, ARCM. Clarinet soloists
1947-68. Professor of Clarinet at the Guildhall 1951-69. Guest lecturer
1974-83. Continued to teach privately in Putney and then Denham. Organiser
of the ICA Clarinet Conference at Roehampton in 1984. Author of books about
clarinettists of the past and present. Many publication and editions.
Contributor to New Grove, Music and Letters, Music and Musicians, The
Clarinet (USA) and Clarinet and Saxophone (UK) etc. 'Clarinet Virtuosi of
the
Past' is now in its 6th edition and has also been translated into Mandarin.
She finally retired shortly after the publication of 'Yesterday's
Clarinettists: a Sequel' in 2002 and now lives in rural Kent. Her research
papers are at Edinburgh University in the Reid Collection.

.... I don't, now that I think about it, own any recordings she's made. Who
exactly is Pamela Weston and what does she do when she isn't writing about
clarinetists or editing clarinet literature?

But, who cares what she thinks? She writes good books about clarinet
players, but....she's not a player, she understands very little of the
style.... Her annotations are greatly damaging, in my opinion. I've
written about it here before, and you can find it in the archives.
