Well, it's not possible to write down in modern notation what's
required to play in the classical style. You have to learn to read
what's actually there 'with a different pair of spectacles'. What's
more, almost no clarinet players understand the classical style
anyway; I certainly didn't when I made my recording of the Mozart --
though I think I've worked out a lot of its elements since.

I don't remember Alan's edition in detail -- I have it somewhere at
home -- but apart from the basset notes I'm sure it's no different
from the usual rubbish people write in. After all, if it had been
possible -- or even if it had been worthwhile doing though not
completely possible -- Mozart would have done it himself. He was
nothing if not a working professional.
