Dear Friends,
Two very exciting concerts I'm in are coming up for May 16th and 20th.
On May 20th, 6:30 pm, Nordstrom Recital Hall, Benaroya Hall, 3rd & Union,
Seattle, I'll be performing John Adams' Clarinet Concerto "Gnarly Buttons."
This concert is a Cornish College of the Arts concert for the Seattle
Symphony's Day of Music. You can get tickets at the door, or buy a ticket
for the SSO 8pm chamber music show (which I'm also playing), and you get
into the 6:30 Adams for free.
Gnarly Buttons was written in 1996, and I believe it is one of the best
clarinet concertos ever. It's alternately humerous - the second movement
is "Hoe Down (Mad Cow)", and moving - the last movement is the best musical
representation of death I've ever heard. He and his father were both
clarinettists, and his father dying of alzheimers heavily influenced the
tone of the piece. This is a Seattle premier, and the piece is not to be
missed. Also on the program are two string quartets - one by my long-time
friend Jennifer
Higdon.

has info about the 8pm show, and details of how to get the "ticket combo"
for the evening shows.
Quake will also be performing "New American Masters" on Tuesday, May 16th,
at 7:30, also at the Nordstrom Recital Hall. With our usual strange
juxtapositioning, we have an interesting evening planned with some chaos in
John Zorn's game piece "Cobra" and some tightly composed, compact little
pieces of beauty in Ned Rorem's "Winter Pages" - 12 movements based on
poems of winter. Also on the program are Rzewski's "Sheep of Panurge,"
Libby Larson's "Corker" for clarinet and percussion, and Chris Stover's
arrangement of Duke Ellington's "New New East St. Louis Toodle-oo." Fun
for all!
