You are right Dan, it does not always work. One case in which I think it
works very well is in Rossini's quartets for flute, clarinet, bassoon and
French horn in F. The blend works, if anything, better with the basset horn,
and the latter has a much easier time with the notes themselves than does
the French horn.

Interesting about Sussmayr, I did not know that.
