Of course, one should hunt that concertante of Soliva down, but I
have a fundmental skepticism about the use of basset horn in
place of a French horn (or vice versa) simply because both are in
F and/or both contain the name "horn" as part of the title of the
instrument.

Depending on the character of the French horn part, the use of a
basset horn may be counter- indicated. To show you how far this
sort thing can go, there is some evidence that Sussmayr, the guy
who completed the Mozart Requiem, thought that a basset horn was
a French horn, and he wrote the parts that he wrote with that
kind of an instrument in mind.

I used to play a lot of English horn music because it was in F
and the name "horn" made me all goofy. But most of the stuff
just never worked. Try the Hindemith English horn sonata on a
basset horn. It is all wacky when played that way.

Here's a link to an interesting website with some free
sheet music downloads of obscure composers. Included
is a Concertante for clarinet, horn and piano by
Soliva (?) based on Mozart themes (the MP3 clip is a
theme from Don Giovani). There's also a substitute
basset horn part for the horn. In addition, there are
a couple of partitas by Genser (early Harmonie?).
