Back in '68 I played lead alto in Bob Borbeck's big band the summer he went back to study mouthpiece making with the younger Kaspar. Borbeck played solo clarinet.

When Bob came back he showed me a solid gold with platinum inlay clarinet mouthpiece that Artie Shaw tried unsuccessfully to talk him out of.

(It is interesting that 2 players out of one band became mouthpiece makers the same summer.)
