For most of his career he played Selmer Balanced Tones, Centered Tones, and
Series 9s. The picture on the front of his recording of the Weber
concertos (early 70's) show him holding a Series 9. Late in life he was
turned to the Dark Side and started playing Buffets. ;-) I have seen
pictures of him playing instruments with obvious crack repair banding
visible. I have also read stories of him giving away the clarinet he was
playing, knowing he could get another from Selmer any time he wanted
one. The inference I get from this evidence is that he was not
particularly obsessive about his instruments.

I think I recall that Artie Shaw played Conns.
