Kurt,
You must have humongous hands to let your index finger contact the side
B-flat key with the back knuckle AND simultaneously keep the finger pad
over the first RH tone hole.
With my 10 year-old-kid hand spread, the normal alignment works best.
My index finger is 3 1/4 inches from back knuckle to tip. The shortest
distance from the B-flat side key to the first tone hole is 2 1/4
inches, but if I force my hand into the position you describe below as
natural for you, I cannot cover the third finger tone hole or touch the
little finger keys at all.
