I'll write a more over the weekend. I know Dave and had him rebuild a
metal bass clarinet. He does good work. And I like his reworked
mouthpieces. The Penzel Muller double wall that I love is marked the
"Clari-met". Interestingly, they also made a "clari-met" as a single
walled model. I think it too was pro quality, but not as good as either
of the double walled models I have played. My one other Penzel is the
American Glorytone. That one was definately a student model. It is an
interesting model because the one I have has a brass body, nickel plated
keys and a solid copper bell. Plays OK, but not pro. I don't know
what to say about the Artist model. Maybe search Klarinet archives and
see if anyone mentioned which wood model was their pro model.

I was actually thinking about bidding on the one with the unsoldered
bell but for an odd reason -- I promised a Silva Bet bell to Lelia. She
found a full boehm silva bet at a hard sale for next to nothing, the
only problem being a badly dented bell. I have a full boehm that came
with two replacement keys that didn't work. (Talk about a disappointing
auction.) I robbed keys from a standard model, so I have some extra.
Actually, I may have a use for more of the horn. A friend's son only
has three fingers on his right hand. He could play clarinet if the
first two ring keys were plateau and independent. I know someone who
could make that work, but he would need extra parts to work with. So, I
have one and a half silva bets set aside. But, if I could have gotten a
really cheap parts one (with the right two keys to donate), well, that
might be attractive. Oh, not all silva bets had the same keywork.
There were all kinds of little differences.

cheers
Jim
