My argument would be that it was simply that *it was patented*; that in
choosing Mazzeo's fingering system you were restricted in your choice of
manufacturer.

I don't think that's a good scheme for propagating an innovation of this
sort. Mazzeo's system is obviously not *necessary*; it may be
convenient or helpful in all sorts of ways, but people continue to give
amazing performances without it.

Rosario Mazzeo apparently came to the same conclusion. His last work in
developing his "uniquely customized clarinet" was apparently using a Buffet
production model (R13???) as the base.

In his book Mazzeo comments that his system would most likely be more widely
used at the expiration of the patent and apparently did realize that
limiting the mechanism to one manufacturer had inhibited its use.

The mechanism is currently not under patent protection and presumably can be
used by any manufacturer.
