My argument would be that it was simply that *it was patented*; that in
choosing Mazzeo's fingering system you were restricted in your choice of
manufacturer.
I don't think that's a good scheme for propagating an innovation of this
sort. Mazzeo's system is obviously not *necessary*; it may be
convenient or helpful in all sorts of ways, but people continue to give
amazing performances without it.
... So, it's not *that* much of what business people call a
"differential"---there's no real commercial advantage to keeping hold of
it---and restricting it just makes it difficult for people to try out.
