The problem that Ed Lacy describes about switching from one
instrument to another is what sunk the Mazzeo system. I always
thought that the idea was brilliant, but it was difficult for
some people (including myself) to master the fingering of the
instrument. I once mentioned this to Mazzeo and he got mad as
hell at me for speaking about it.

... so then Selmer realized that they had to put a "clutch" on the
professional level Selmer Paris Mazzeo clarinets [as well as some American
Signets] in order to disable the mechanism thus allowing one to purchase a
Selmer Series 9* or Series 10 or Signet with a Mazzeo mechanism that could
then be disabled as if the mechanism were not there.
[One can just imagine the discussion in the Marketing Department over that
decision.]
