In our society, being able to read and understand what you are reading is
essential for all jobs including musicians. Even to a musician, good
language skills need to have a higher priority than their music skills if
they expect to really make it in music. Look at all the competition out
there. There are already enough musicians to fill each available job many
times over. Way too many have to have a "day job" to make ends meet. When
there's so many to pick from, do you think anybody is going to bother with
the guy who can't fill out a job application or write a decent resume?

It is a matter of priorities. Regardless of one's lifestyle, job ambitions,
talents, or abilities, decent language skills are essential.
