John, I can't know what you saw in the instrument(s) you sent back, but a
very long oil soak is part of the manufacturing process and should leave any
new clarinet sufficiently saturated, whether or not one agrees that routine
oiling later is necessary. Maintaining a constant appropriate humidity level
(which has nothing to do with oil - humidity is water) is always a good idea
whether the clarinet is new or old.
