Al was indeed a legend, I was lucky enough to had a few lessons from him
before he retired in the early 80s. He was a hoot, you could wind him up in a
lesson and he would just sit there and do amazing stuff on a clarinet. He was
the last of a breed of great military band soloists. It was in one of those
early lessons with him that I developed my personal soloist credo, "everyone
enjoys watching an unnatural act". Al was the most natural, unnatural act one
will ever see on the clarinet. He also taught this 6 lesson conducting class,
that was better than 3 college semester worth. He swore he could teach
anyone to conduct in 6 lessons, we never got too many of the Army band conductors
to take his class though. I'm 46, I find myself missing some of the truly
"original" characters that played the clarinet. Trust me there is one more to
miss today!

Tom Puwalski, former soloist with the US Army Field Band, Clarinetist with
Lox&Vodka, and Author of "The Clarinetist's Guide to Klezmer"and most recently
by the order of the wizard of Oz, for supreme intelligence, a Masters in
Clarinet performance
