I'm surprised
that your use of a wide open setting results in only 50%. Of course, 100%
would be like rain in the case. :-)
Is 50% an optimum percentage without causing problems?

It's a very nicely designed little product. Get it while it's hot!

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Wide open = 50% maximum (with 2 humistats) in a dozen clarinet cases I own.
Works slightly better in new cases.

Us folks who were trained for too many years in scientific fields actually
do occasionally replicate our experiments. I have never been able to get the
reading on a hygrometer inside a clarinet case above 50% with two humistats.
On the other hand, if you put the humistat in freezer sized zip lock bag
with a clarinet barrel, the hygrometer will read about 70% which I have been
lead to believe by someone I consider an expert on such numbers is too high
for grenadilla. At 70%, the loose rings get VERY tight.

As context for the 50% number, I believe that I have read that: a) Buffet
manufactures clarinets in a factory with 50% humidity settings (but I do not
remember where I saw this reference); and b) a large Internet retailer says
in their catalogs that they store Buffet clarinets in a humidity controlled
50% room before they send them to you.
