Rather than call Wolfgang "woolfy" or some inane monicer like that, I once
had a prof in college (German too) whose given name Wolfgang was Anglisized
to Walt.

And I was told by him that Wolfgang could be a apt translation for the
English "Walter" but there is no holding water to that one.

I just like the sound of Walt Mozart, not like the neo facist Walt Disney,
but as an apt anglisizing of his Germanic name.

I think the boys at Ellis Island would've loved me.
