Two things:
1. Sweet Almond Oil is a commonly used oil on wooden
instruments. Pest attraction has never been an issue
that I have ever heard about! I leave a spare oboe out
on a stand for weeks at a time and never had anything
try to eat it. :)
2. Wood dries out. Over time the instrument will show
signs of dryness (lightening wood hue, visible grains,
fingerprints). The arguement for oiling is that when
your instrument finally becomes a dry one you are
introducing a drastic amount of moisture whenever you
pick it up to play than than when your instrument has
some degree of protection from a seasonal oiling
regime. The wood is kept more supple and less prone to
cracking.
I think a major problem is people who like to oil
their instruments excessively and use large amounts to
where the wood swells and cracks. I think makers
probably see more damage from abuse of oiling (in a
warranty period) than just letting the instrument
naturally dry out and would certainly recommend
against oiling.
