Roger, you've hit the nail on the head!

Some people require consistency from one person to the next before they
will acknowledge that an effect is useful knowledge. For example,
whenever someone mentions that minor keys are "plaintive", other people
will object because this isn't true for them, and probably it differs
from one culture to the next.

...well, it's true that musical effects vary from one person or culture
to another. But this is NOT the same as saying that there is no
effect.

...and this is one of the reasons why I could not keep my mouth closed
when someone alleged that a composer/conductor/performer/critic/etc
"knows" best about a composition, and any other version is 'wrong'.

I *do* understand why a person may want to obey a composer, or to obey
the majority, within a particular context. I don't mean to dismiss
such issues. But to claim that something is musical nonsense in all
situations simply doesn't work for me.

...and making such a claim isolates the speaker from many worthwhile
musical events.
