Mahler 4, bass clarinet must switch from one in B-flat to one in
A (or the other way round, I forget) in order to play a passage
in multiple sharpts but which would not have been necessary on
the original clarinet. There is no way to explain Mahler's
action except under the questionable hypothesis that he wanted
the sound of a particular clarinet. The passage is a small duet
with the solo voice.

Go figure.

And I also wish to voice my disagreement that a C clarinet is
ususally for a period instrument, though that is from someone
other than Joe.

I'm having trouble remembering exactly what the pieces were, but
I seem to recall playing some Strauss stuff in which the composer
had perversely called for a specific clarinet in an unfriendly
key.
