Several people have posted about disobeying the composer's instructions
out of necessity --- lack of specified instrument, level of performance
skill, demands of modern vs. earlier audiences, etc.

But these considerations are _not_ the same as deciding that one
particular category of musician --- composer, conductor, performer,
audience, historian, critic, etc --- should always be the final
authority.

When considering "Who is boss?", we should remember that the composer
doesn't pay us to conduct/play/listen/etc.
