Ted, et al,
Pete might have played alto clarinet on a session once, but I kind of doubt
it. If so, he borrowed the instrument. It more likely would have been Gary
Foster, who has recorded on many occasions with Toshiko Akiyoshi and Clare
Fischer on the alto clarinet. I know Pete, he HATES the clarinet. A couple of his
clarinet remarks: "I walked by the closet and the darn thing was squeaking
in the case"; "I tried burying it in the back yard, but the dog kept digging
it up". He is one of the GREAT tenor Sax players of our time, however. In
addition to his Tonight Show and Steely Dan work, he was in the section for most
of the Star Trek shows from "Next Generation" on and is frequent guest
soloist with college jazz programs.
The alto clarinet is a beautiful instrument. I own a fantastic Leblanc, well
two if you must know. I could be talked out of one! I got to use it on a
recording for Clare Fischer.
Funny alto clar story: Gary Foster lost the neck for his in an airport
search recently. He told me about it and said, "thank God I never have to play the
thing again!" Well I happened to find a "parts" one on Ebay and gave him the
neck from it. I'm not sure he will ever forgive me!

Pete Christleib also plays jazz alto clarinet on some recordings---no
soloing I have heard, however---part of an overdubbed ww section. He does,
however, play excellent clarinet! He was on Doc Severensen's band that
played the old Tonight Show, and he is also famous for his tenor solo on
Steely Dan's "Deacon Blues."
