a nice alternative to rubber bands are those fabric
covered elastic bands marketed for the purpose of
establishing pony tails for women of all ages. they
come in different sizes and colors. One brand is
"Goody," which sells packages of 30.

I imagine that the geometry of elastic bands might be
a bit different for one-piece clarinets, opposed to
two (actually four) piece clarinets.
