Update:

Mr. Rossi contacted me via e-mail today, in response to Mr. Silveira's
message to him last night.

Mr. Rossi sent his apologies, is going to arrange to have the instrument
fixed here in the U.S., and encouraged me to contact him again, if
necessary.

Now that I've been able to communicate with him, I'm sure this problem will
be taken care of fairly seamlessly.
