Subj: [kl] Clarinet Summit at Westpoint w/ Combs as featured artist
Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2006 09:05:46 -0500

A two-day Clarinet Summit at West Point begins at 10 a.m. 3-17-06 in the
Eisenhower Hall ballroom and ends with a concert at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the
theater. There will be numerous guest artists who will present performances,
master workshops and recitals, all free and open to the public.

Headliners include Larry Combs, principal clarinetist with the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra, and clarinetist Stephen Girko, formerly with the Dallas
Symphony Orchestra and now with the Austin Symphony. Also featured will be
Jim Pyne, clarinet professor at Ohio State; composer Dana Wilson of Ithaca
College; and the U.S. Military Academy Band's principal clarinetist, Sgt.
1st Class John Parrette.

Event coordinator Sgt. 1st Class Shawn Herndon, a clarinetist, said Girko
will offer a recital at 5 p.m. today and Combs will be in recital at 8:15
p.m.

Tomorrow's 8 p.m. concert will include the world premiere of "Liquid Ebony,"
a composition by Wilson to be played by Combs.

The Summit was financed by the USMA Band, which is directed by Lt. Col.
Timothy Holtan.

Separate from the Summit and supported by the band is a free 3 p.m. concert
Sunday by band member Staff Sgt. Jason Ham. It will be at the Jewish Chapel
at the Academy. Ham, who plays the euphonium (small tuba), is a member of
the concert band.

For information about the Clarinet Summit or the euphonium concert, call
938-2445 or the concert hot line at 938-2617 or check the Web site
www.usma.army.mil/band.

Because security is tight at West Point, arrive early enough for a full
photo identification and vehicle check.
