As a UK academic (not music) who is an active
researcher, can I recommend using the online databases
of journal articles. There might be something in one
of those, although I had a brief look and did not find
anything. You may have access to more, studying music.

You are right that studying languages is not generally
a requirement for UK doctoral students.

A weakness in the availability of information is that
of old books (out of print). Maybe an out of print
biography might have the information you are looking
for.Check the references in the books that you do
have. If you can find the book, it might be availbale
through the British Library.
