I visited the Boosey and Hawkes factory in the 1970s, when Yamaha had
computer controlled machinery and B&H did not, and discussed this with the
CEO. They were currently pondering the investment for computerized
tools(they bought Buffet instead). The machines for drilling the tone holes
were all designed in the 1930s and were standard drill presses with an
ingenious jigging system that could be set up to rotate and translate the
joint to drill holes at any position and angle, plus a multiple-bit head on
the press. In a way they worked too well since they long outlived what
should have been their sell-by date. They worked very well for precision,
but not for productivity.

WOW- Thanks so much for this-

You know- the machines that shape and drill the billet appear to be
computer controlled. I wonder how this was done back in the 40's and
50's before computer controlled machines existed- how was the extreme
accuracy achieved then?
