How a trill is played is considerably more complicated than
writing out the pitches in a particular rhythmic way. Trills have
many ways to be played, and to write out a specific form fixes
the rhythmic pattern, in most cases incorrectly; i.e., a Brahms
trill is quite different than a Mozart trill which is different
from a Mendelssohn trill. And then there are also the questions
of the leading tone preceding the trill and the presence or
absence of a nachschlag.

What Oliver is doing, is putting his ideas about how something
should be played into a fixed and immutable format. To do may
stifle what was actually being done in the period. It is poor
performance practice to try and fit a trill into a single
pattern, and it is worse history.

I couldn't agree more. Setting up whole scores with a music
notation
program is very simple given a little inspiration and time. I
probably ought to indicate where the scores on my Web site come
from
but I don't because of the occasional zealot in the music
publishing
industry who thinks that works in the public domain are
completely
copyrightable with a change in slur here and an alternate
notation
for a crescendo there. Just for that reason I make sure, as the
mood
strikes me, to change <<< to cresc., and vice versa, put in all
the
staccatos in lieu of "simile" and occasionally write out trills
with
32nd or 64th notes. No self respecting music publisher would
dream
of claiming that I had stolen his or her edition. It is Ollie's
edition all the way! Copying is encouraged! 8-)

I'm working on a deliciously sweet project right now. It should
be
ready for download in less than a month. My source came through
again! She hasn't failed me yet. This one took 3 months for her
to
find, but she did it. A mention of it first occurred on this
list
last September or October so I thank all of you folks for being
such
good sources of information. The microfilm arrived last week and
it
is a lovely piece. 'Nuff said. Watch this space!
