I'm sorry Dan to have been insensitive - I was just curious as I have read
so many of your knowledgable posts over the years I have belonged to this
list and wondered. I am lucky enough to have the clarinet of an older
teacher friend of mine who decided that if he couldn't continue to play how
he felt he should due to limitations then he wouldn't play at all and he too
sold all his instruments. So actually I think/hope I do understand.

So please accept my apologies for my nosiness.

With best wishes,
Lorraine

Lorraine, you are right. It is an insensitive question. Everyone
has different ways to get older. In my case, several impediments
are making it more and more difficult for me to play and they are
all physical.

I don't want to dwell on the details. It makes me sound morose.
I'm still intellectually sound but those physical skills needed
to play well are deserting me.

This may have been covered a long time ago and I'm sorry if maybe
it is an
insensitive question - but why are you selling all your
instruments and
books? Why would you sell 'the finest basset horn ever made'?

As I have indicated on several occasions, I will put my basset
horn on ebay sometime towards the last part of this year, and in
any case, no later than early January 2007.

Now to my point: I am giving serious consideration to going to
the Okla clarinet festival to sell my books, and also to allow
anyone who wants to, an opportunity to play my basset horn (using
their standard B-flat clarinet mouthpiece).

Is this too corny an idea, or does it have some merit??? I don't
want to appear as if I am hawking something, but I did want to
give maximum opportunity to those who might be interested to have
a whack at the horn before it goes on sale. This basset horn has
been my friend for some time now (with a performance of the
Requiem in Monterat, CA this weekend), and I want to examine the
players who might be interested, eliminating those who don't
appreciate the finest basset horn ever made.
