I didn't write the quote attributed to me below, but my answer to
your question, nonetheless, is that to not know note names (whether
A-B-C, Do-Re-Mi, or whatever system one's region prefers) is to be
partially illiterate in the language of music.

I realize the counter argument is that plenty of wonderful musicians
don't read music, but I cannot excuse illiteracy because someone
*might* be able to make wonderful music without ever reading a note.
Students will always find a way to get through the cracks, but not
for lack of effort on my part.
