Do I understand you correctly that you play something while your student
listens, and then you ask the student to 'find' the notes on their
instrument as they try to play it back to you?

Or do you mean only that you ask your students to learn the music at
home by whatever manner they prefer and then to play it for you during
the lesson without the printed music in front of them?
