 >>More to the point, how do you test drive a car (other than the dealer's
own car) when you are ordering a brand new one made to your
specification, as almost all cars are now in Europe?

"almost all cars are now in Europe" - not true.

The Buffet reps are continually going back and forth from the factories. I
can tell you that I have been down at Vince Marinelli's when he's had 50
clarinets for us to check out, and that's no exaggeration. Plenty of every
model. You can also go to the headquarters in California, instead of
France. They have plenty to try out there.

Of course, the sales reps try out more than 50, they know what they are
looking for, and what they try is the new stock which Buffet provides to
them. Since they've done it so much, I tend to think it's worth a few extra
bucks to let them choose and then we all go thru the stuff they bring home.

You guys just don't have the "shopping gene"....those of you who emailed me
privately and said they don't try out 10 cars! I can't fix 'em, so I am
picky. I don't buy new cars, I do 1-2 year olds - don't believe in giving
dealers an extra few thou for a car. That's what you lose once it leaves
the lot....and it takes me a long time to make that money, don't know about
 you.

I approach buying clarinets basically the same way. At least horns don't
 depreciate to that extent, however....
