Of course, they (mostly) only need one, but we need Eb, A, Bb, C, basset
clarinet, basset horn and bass clarinet as a basic working set! But your
point is valid.

Concerning the price of barrels, I had an interesting discussion with Walter
Grabner about this. Though barrels look simple, there is actually far more
work in making a barrel than in finishing a mouthpiece from a blank. It is
pretty much a day's job including fitting and adjusting on a clarinet, and a
half-day job even if just turned out without fitting/voicing. I now see why
they (and custom bells) are so expensive.

Maybe it'll help to consider that whatever you've paid so far wouldn't buy a
mediocre violin or viola, much less a cello, bass or even a bassoon or oboe.
And a pricey barrel or mouthpiece doesn't come close to what a good bow
costs for any string instrument. I hate looking at the prices of clarinets,
too, but we really have a much more affordable road to travel, even with the
added shop adjustments we need to pay for after delivery, than a serious
string player or even another woodwind player.

Doesn't make it less expensive, but maybe a little less painful.
