It always seems a little odd to me that whenever a thread like this comes
up, it always seems to devolve to a discussion of why (a) Buffet doesn't
exercise more quality control and (b) whether of not Buffet in general and
R13 in particular is really as good as or any better than [name another
brand/maker/even Buffet non-R13 model] or is overrated, especially in light
of manufacturing flaws that plague Buffet clarinets (the discussion comes
back to (a)).

So often the discussion becomes aggressive-defensive. "Why do you defend
Buffet when they produce crap..." is parried by "I bought a Buffet from
so-and-so who did some set-up work and it's the best instrument I have ever
played" countered by "Well, why should you have to have someone set it up
for you - why doesn't it play out of the box?" etc., etc... Maybe my memory
is weakening inversely as my age increases, but other makers' instruments
never seem to become targets in quite the same way. Which begs the question:

Why do players who don't like what Buffet produces buy something else? Why
waste effort worrying about Buffet. Clearly, Selmer, Yamaha and Leblanc, not
to mention the smaller custom makers, put out excellent products (as, in my
opinion, does Buffet, although I myself play on Selmers). I don't mean to
criticize anyone for his/her opinion or for expressing it. I just wonder
sometimes why Buffet turns out to be the brand everything else ends up being
compared to and why all of the point-counterpoint about clarinet quality
seems to boil down to what's wrong or right with Buffet.
