I know I am going to sound irritating to some, but I changed in 1990
from Buffet to Yamaha. At that time Buffet could not make a good A
clarinet. If they did I never played it. But Yamaha was making A's that
were responsive (my old Buffet would die if I played the Pines of Rome
solo too softly, which was something I wanted to do), superior
intonation (combining the response problems with the poor intonation
made playing the solo in the slow movement of the Ravel PF Concerto a
real lip bend), etc. People told me it was the reg key vent. Why
couldn't Buffet have made a cl with the correct length of tube in my
bore? So I bought a Yamaha A. After that I tried a 8 Yamaha Beefers at
a store one day and would have left with six of them. I did not geek
out and try changing barrels to see if that would make a difference,
like I would have if I were trying Buffets. A few years earlier I had
tried some Buffet A's to see if I could find anything better than what
I had... and tried to make one work the way I felt it should. I gave
up. Maybe Buffet has changed. But from what I am hearing, they haven't.

I have a custom Yamaha barrel for my Bb that rings just as well as any
Moennig barrel ever made my Buffet ring. I am also playing Backuns
because they play great and respond so well. Plus they invite lots of
questions. But I say... to each his own...(oops his/her own).
