Yes it is amazing how different recording techniques can capture (or not as
the case may be) different nuances. As can the difference between live and
studio recordings. This is a fascinating field of research and this aspect
of performance practice has been fascinating.

At the risk of 'flaming' I was thinking of adding a cello performance to the
comparision and would be curious to what peoples reations would be. I
obviously realise that it was written for clarinet first, but know there are
a lot of recordings of the Fantasy Pieces done on cello and thought this
would be an interesting thing to compare and comment on.

Another thing to think about: Did recording techiques in the days of
LPs capture timbre differences as subtle as alternate fingerings?
Perhaps some recordings did and others didn't?
