I think it may be more than repairs; comments by a Danish friend led me
to believe that orchestras there also provide regular supplies such as
reeds.

It makes sense IMO. How much does it cost? Probably about €2000.-- a
year per player. Not exactly a big investment to guarantee that,
whatever their personal financial problems, all musicians are guaranteed
to have equipment in top condition.
