IMO it makes a great deal of difference, since in how fonts etc. work,
there's no meaningful difference between Windows 2000 and XP.

I think it's a Finale problem, not a Windows one. I should add that
when Finale 2006 was released, many of the serious professional
engravers on the Finale forums were commenting they would still be
sticking with 2004, since 2005 had introduced problems of stability that
were just too problematic to work around, and 2006 did not resolve these
issues.

If you still have your 2004 install disk, pull it out, install that
version, and see how you get on with it. I'm willing to bet the problem
will vanish.

Not at all. I can (and have) made use of Maestro fonts in other
applications, such as Word. I've also used the Windows Character Map in
order to select sequences of characters from the Maestro font which I
can then copy and paste into a Finale document.

Fonts in Windows, as with all other OS's that I'm aware of, are
registered with the GUI, not with individual programs. If a font is
installed on your system, *any* app can use it. That's why Finale is
quite capable of using Times New Roman or Arial or other fonts (for
noteheads, too, if you really want!), despite the fact that they are
never "associated with" Finale in the way you seem to think Maestro
should be.

If it really was a Windows issue, you'd see this sort of thing happening
with other apps, and other fonts, on a regular basis. But you don't.

It sounds to me like something is getting corrupted inside Finale, or
maybe within the .mus files or the Maestro font files.
