I was free Thursday night last week and heard a program of about6
students playing the various clarinet literature. The faculty of
Jim Campbell, Howard Klug, and Eli Eban were all present and it
was not indicated which student belonged to which teacher. But
they were SENSATIONAL!!! One young Korean student, who is a
Freshman, ate the first movement of one of the Crusell concerti.
I can't figure out how a student from such a culturally different
society could assimilate the European tradition with such aplomb.

Many of the graduates are going into the military, and who can
blame them. The service picks up $60,000 of University debt.

But in the back of my mind I was trying to come to grips with the
problem of graduating 20-30 splending clarinet players per year
where the marked is for none or almost none. I suppose it could
be argued that Universities should restrict the flow. but that's
an intrusion into personal choice. Tough problem.

But those kids can really play. They get the cream of the crop in
the first place, and then sandpaper them until smooth.
