There were some very good comments for those who loathe practicing
scales (me included). There don't seem to be any shortcuts to
attaining technique and proficiency. My teacher has been telling me
about the importance of practicing long tones and paying attention to
the air, support, consistency of the sound, lightness of touch with
my fingers, etc. etc. I know he's right, but I keep looking for
shortcuts anyway. :-)

One book that was recommended to me through this list that I've found
very helpful is "Tone, Technique & Staccato" (Mel Bay), Avrahm Galper
Clarinet Series. I got it through Gary Van Cott, http://
www.vcisinc.com. I can easily spend an hour at a clip working my way
through exercises, and it's not torture. Actually, it's rather
pleasant! As far as I can tell, this book has about everything you
need in it, including a fingering chart, suggestions for alternate
fingerings, and lots of suggestions for practicing and getting the
most out of the exercises.

Now I have to go practice!
