This is a sad blow indeed. I knew Nick a little through the Royal Society,
and I spent a marvelous day with him in his clarinet collection in
Cambridge, playing instruments from 1780 onwards. A lovely man, he was kind
and generous with his time and his experience, and his knowledge - of his
second subject - was truly prodigious. The Guardian obituary sums him up
well.
The last time I heard from him, he was hopeful that new drugs would be
effective against his cancer, but obviously it was not to be.
The worlds of science and music have suffered a great loss.
RIP Nick.
