Oh no, I would NEVER recommend super glue or any type of glue, other than a
properly formulated bonding agent for wood. And of course proper clamping,
banding, or pinning, although I have never seen how the latter works. Seems
to me that where a crack is an expansion, the key to fixing it would be
retraction, and clamping or banding would best suit that purpose. But the
question remains if the crack is in a barrel and not in one of the major
upper or lower joints, why not just purchase a replacement barrel?

I still am a hobby bookbinder and I have my qualms with Poly-vinyl acetate
being no more than souped-up Elmers glue, but back in the day, when hooves
and other animal parts were used to make glues, they WERE known to WORK,
that is to BIND, LAST, and do the JOB they were intended to do.

Space age polymers on natural substances such as super glue, is like our
willingness to use petroleum based bore-oils and cork grease on our most
prized instruments, and why would you subject your $2K+ masterpiece of
craftmanship and nature to something that is petroleum-based and
antithetical and destructive to the structural properties of the wood?

I'm sorry to Oh Suzan 419 if my suggestions offend her, but as a naturalist
and a purist, I just have to disagree that super glue is a sufficient answer
for any mending job, especially where something as delicate and important as
a prized instrument is concerned.

Shalom,

Rafi
