Subj: [kl] Eastman Wind Ensemble - 53rd Anniversary Concert (Attn. Leeson!)
Date: Fri, 10 Feb 2006 20:00:44 -0500

Last Wednesday, February 8th, 2006, I attended a concert in honor of
Frederick Fennell in Kilbourn Hall of the Eastman School of Music. The
concert was held on the 53rd anniversary of the first concert by the
Eastman Wind Ensemble on February 8th, 1953. The program was identical
to the initial program, as follows:

Serenade No. 10 in B flat major, K. 361/370a by Mozart
Nonet for Brass by Wallingford Riegger
Symphony in B flat by Hindemith

The Mozart was conducted by Donald Hunsberger, who played baritone in
the original concert. Martin Seggelke conducted the Riegger and Mark
Scatterday conducted the Hindemith.

Considering the correspondence on this list, I was most interested to
see and hear whether string bass, contrabassoon or contrabass clarinet
was used in the Mozart. In his own recording, Fennell used, I believe,
a combination of all three, rather than the string bass called for by
Mozart. In this performance, both string bass and contrabassoon were
used. The contra did not double all of the string bass part and was
used sparingly.

I didn't get to talk with Hunsberger after the performance, but did talk
with Scatterday. I asked if the contra was used to exactly duplicate
Fennell's performance. He indicated that was not the intent, but that
the contra was used to balance things (these are my words, not
Scatterday's). He was clearly aware of Mozart's scoring and said he had
a copy of the manuscript. I mentioned Dan Leeson's unbending views on
on what Mozart called for, and he said he has talked with Dan.

I don't know what was done about the extra measure.

It was, in spite of the contra, a glorious concert, particularly the Mozart.
