I was on the board of directors of a local private choral group a
number of years ago. The first hint that I might be entering a
culture sufficiently different from my 9-5 experiences was when I was
given and read a book with the title something like "Managing
Artistic Organizations." There's nothing on Amazon.com with a title
close to that (on the first 10 which came up, in any case), so I'm
not sure about the title, but it became abundantly clear to me that I
was dealing with a bunch of wannabee prima donnas (my opinion only)
and they operate according to rules which I didn't understand and
never did quite grasp fully. After about 5 years I resigned from the
board. I wasn't doing them any good and it was taking a lot of my
time which could have been better spent playing the clarinet.

I feel very badly for everyone involved in this sad episode.
