Subj: [kl] acoustical question

Some months ago, someone posted a message on this list in which they =
mentioned a mysterious acoustical phenomenon.=A0 The message mentioned =
that they had blown across the top of a plastic bottle and noted the =
pitch that resulted.=A0 Then, they squeezed the bottle, presumably =
reducing the interior volume, but were surprised that the pitch fell =
rather than rising, as might be intuitively expected.

I mentioned this to Dr. Darrell Megli, friend and colleague who is a =
physicist, acoustician, and enthusiastic amateur musician.=A0 I knew =
that he would find this problem to be fascinating, and as a person who =
is ready to research such problems without much provocation, he would =
probably get to work to try to find out what was causing this anomalous =
result.=A0 He has just sent me a report on his experiment. The report =
is too long to send to the list, as it contains images, and therefore =
"mime content." I would be glad to send it as an e-mail attachment to =
anyone who may be interested. Just reply to me individually rather than =
to the list: =20
