I absolutely accepted this story from the first
minute. There seems nothing suspicious about it.
Ironic and amusing timing, perhaps, but not
suspicious.

Regarding the misunderstandings, curt language and
hurt feelings, I believe these things are inevitable
on this or any unmoderated list. They're not good, if
they obscure the clarinetty things we want to talk
about most of the time, but they'll happen. We have
different cultures, languages, and temperaments.

I wrote this a few months ago to someone else on the
list about a similar fuss. I think it's pretty good.

will get uncomfortable. I certainly get
uncomfortable. You also know that most of what you
write here is intelligent, subtle, challenging, and

I have written stupid things here, and I have written

stupid (or a moron) if and when I write more stupid
things. If I
write something really worthwhile, and if you call it
stupid, I will do my best to work out what I meant to
say and to work out what you are getting at. And I'll
defend my thought if I still consider it worth
defending. I would try not to be angry or to have my
feelings hurt too badly, because I have seen that you
always have had a good reason for what you've said,
however bluntly. I think this sort of interchange is
appropriate (or at least inevitable) on this list."

I like this list. Chaotic at time, but full of many
wise and interesting people.
