Uh, you were expecting *good* music? At halftime? During the Super Bowl?
;)

I enjoyed watching Mick Jagger spaz around like a squirrel in springtime at
his age. I should only dance that badly when I'm over 60. (I should only
dance that badly next year when I'm 58!) Granted, he can't carry a tune any
more, even if the tune is "Satisfaction," which I think has a compass of
less than an octave; but I'd rather see the Stones up there than some juicy
pop tart's carefully staged wardrobe malfunction. And that's why the Super
Bowl invited the Stones: The network suits figure they can trust a geezer
band not to drop trou.

Come to think of it, I'd rather watch the Stones than those zebras, too. I
think the referees won that game....

Kidding aside, though, that crowd under the plastic tongue in the pit did
have that telltale Central Casting "call for extras" look; and I miss the
big marching band numbers at halftime. The bands didn't deliver great
music, either, but they carried on a tradition special to football. I
wonder if it's even possible that watching the discipline of musicians
playing in formation may have had a subliminally positive effect on crowd
behavior. The stands are such a zoo now that I won't go to live football
any more. The final straw, last time I went to a Deadskins game--well, it
wasn't a straw. It was the pitcher's worth of beer the slob next to me
barfed all over my legs.
