Walter Grabner once noticed that my bell's bore didn't match my lower
joint's bore precisely (where socket and tenon meet). Thus my clarinet
had an 'unintended choke' of sorts.

Walter did a number of other adjustments, and terefore I don't know
which adjustment accounted for which improvement in intonation, but I
was happier with my overall intonation after the servicing. In
particular, my tuner no longer becomes 'confused' (no longer bounces all
over the place) with this particular bell on a note whose timbre used to
bother my ear a bit.

Since it's an easy measurement for you (or a technician) to make,
perhaps you should check for a similar problem on your bell/lower joint
before you think about other more major work?

(In fact, have you had a thorough servicing by someone competent before
you mess with other things?)
